Icom IC-F27SR - Icom's New PMR446 Licence Free Transceiver

21 November 2011

Icom have recently launched their new PMR446 professional licence free transceiver the IC-F27SR which is the successor to the IC-F25SR.  Icom have taken the popular features of the of the IC-F25SR and made major improvements including a smaller and lighter body, 800mW loud and intelligible audio, which  means it can be used in extremely noisy environments without the audio been affected.  The built in VOX function allows hands-free operation when using the optional headset and adapter cable.  The IC-F27SR has several new scanning and security features such as a surveillance function which turns off the LED and beep sounds and a siren function that can be used as a security alarm.  Other features include CTCSS and DTCS encoder and decoder for group calls (cloning software required for setting the tone code), power save function, low battery alert, time out timer and monitor function.

It is a simple to use radio with just three main controls; transmit button, volume control and channel selector and is ideal for construction, catering, event management, shopping centres, factories, farms as well as serious outdoor enthusiasts who don’t want to use licensed radios.

The IC-F27SR features a highly efficient circuitry meaning you can get up to 35.5 hours of operating time with the BP-265 Li-ion battery pack (typical operation with power save function on. TX:RX:Stand-by=5:5:90)

The IC-F27SR is an extremely rugged radio with an IP54 rating and United States Military standard rating MT-STD-810.  It has been tested to 11 categories of environmental and military standards for dust protection and water resistance making it suitable for outdoor use.

Product Review Of The Motorola TLKR T4

13 September 2011

The Motorola TLKR T4 is the third installment of the new TLKR range, on first observations it may shock you at how cost effective the T4 is in comparison to the features you get for your money. The T4 is similar to the T6 except that it doesn’t come with a battery and charging unit. This allows you to use cheaper alternative batteries and charging options, but still has the benefits that come with any Motorola radio.  The TLKR T4 pack comes with the 2 radios, 2 belt clips and the user guide. Just add batteries and away you go.
The Motorola TLKR T4 is a very easy to use radio complete with just enough simple features required by any radio user. However, Motorola have removed the complicated, and for some people unnecessary, features that the other TLKR range radios have to offer.  It is ideal for those who want a radio that offers immediate contact at the touch of a button.  The provided Motorola user guide is very helpful for those who may not have had experience with radios before, as it explains what all of the buttons do; it goes through step by step instructions of how to use the radio and navigating through the menu, providing step by step diagrams of what options there will be on screen and which buttons to press.

For those who have other licence free radios and are looking for an upgrade or just a new radio it is very easy to set up and have your old model radios and new TLKR T4 radios working by making sure the channels and sub codes are the same on all radios.

The TLKR T4 has 8 channels and one of its features is a channel scan, which allows you to easily scan all 8 channels. When an active channel is detected the radio will pause on that channel until it is clear.  The T4 radios each use 3 AAA alkaline batteries and it is recommended that these are high quality batteries.  The T4’s have a battery level meter on the display indicating the status of the batteries and will flash when the batteries are low.   The T4 has a monitor mode feature which allows you to listen for weak signals on the current channel at the press of a key.  It also is equipped with a call tone that will be transmitted at the push of a button.  The radio keys can be locked to prevent accidental transmission and when there is no transmission or call within 3 seconds the radio will switch to the power save mode which is designed to extend the life of the batteries. You are able to still receive transmissions in this mode.  The radios also feature a Roger Beep, which will notify the end of a transmission so the other person can make sure that the full transmission can be heard.

Overall I found the TLKR T4 to be a very good simple radio and you should not be put of by the small box it comes in. All that’s really missing are the batteries and charging unit. The T4 is an economical alternative to the T6 and T8 models for people who want a radio without any fancy features that will still provide them with all the performance of a 2 way radio.

Motorola Battery Update

18 July 2011

Motorola have recently been updating their battery portfolio to ensure ongoing compliance with the latest EU regulations.   The dimensions of some of the batteries have slightly changed and some users of the Commercial Series CP radios have encountered problems with fitting the new batteries into chargers.  The issue can easily be resolved by refitting the rail insert on the charger.

New MOTOTRBO™ Bluetooth Wireless Accessories

18 July 2011

Motorola have announced their new MOTOTRBO™ Bluetooth wireless accessory portfolio which is available now.  They have developed a set of accessories ranging from low-cost commercial earpieces to rugged high performance earpieces.  Central to their portfolio is the wireless adapter which attaches to the MOTOTRBO™ portable radio accessory connector.  Powered by the radio, the wireless adapter has a blue light around its PTT button which flashes to show it’s instantly paired with the earpiece.  The Bluetooth wireless accessories can be used when the radio is used in both digital and analogue modes.  The Bluetooth wireless adapter can also be paired with commercially available Bluetooth headsets as well.  Wireless accessories free you up from being tethered to the radio, allow convenience and freedom from holding, wearing or carrying a radio allowing extension of PTT, microphone and earpiece functions up to 10 meters away from the radio.  You can put the radio in a bag or pocket out of sight with no visible cables or on a desk or in a draw protecting the radio from been dropped or damaged.
